In the wild, lobsters 🦞 can live up to 50 years. As they grow, lobsters, like all arthropods 🪲 🦋, must shed their old shell and grow a bigger one beneath. This process is called moulting. As the lobster ages, it takes more and more energy to shed, so that several lobsters die of exhaustion during the moult while others simply stop moulting until their exoskeleton degrades. The largest lobster ever found came from Nova Scotia and it weighed 44.4 pounds (20.2kg). That is a massive lobster! In cases where a two-toned lobster is found, with the color split down the middle, it can often be because one half of the lobster is male and the other half is female. They are known as chimeras and the chances of finding one are about 1 in 50 million. When these are found, they are usually released or donated to an aquarium🐡.
