“Ice cream? You’ve got to be kidding me,” A shivering arctic fox rolled her eyes as she hurried past Marlow the Polar Bear’s ice cream truck. Marlow frowned. He hadn’t sold a single ice cream cone all day, again. Outside his stand, the icy wind howled, and the snow was accumulating fast. Marlow checked the temperature and shivered- the thermometer indicated it was a chilly -40 degrees. Just then, a symphony of honking from the sky caught Marlow’s attention. A synchronized “V” of geese was journeying south. Marlow took one last look at his empty ice cream truck and then hollered up at the sky, “Wait for me, friends! I’m coming, too!” Marlow hopped in his ice cream truck and put the pedal to the metal- due south. With dreams of selling ice cream beachfront in balmy temperatures, things were looking up.

Polar bears are powerful predators that live primarily along the icy coastlines in Northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. This rugged terrain consists of drifting sea ice, snow-covered tundra, and frigid waters. While it may seem cartoonish to imagine polar bears on ice flows, it’s a critical component of their hunting grounds. Polar bears will travel on the ice to scope out breaks in the ice that prey utilize when coming up for air. For this reason, polar bears follow the seasonal expansion and retreat of the ice. Winter affords them expansive hunting grounds while summer often squeezes them closer to shore. Their habitat is essentially a living, shifting map that changes shape every day.

Despite the polar bear’s tough and rugged reputation, our friend Marlow measures in at 10 inches. The luxurious polypropylene stuffing stitched together with a soft plush exterior and polyester shell makes this little guy one cuddly bear. Marlow is the perfect companion for anyone in search of snuggles that also appreciates the side-eyed humor and charm.
