Macarons are an example of a concept in baking that took on a second life when it left its homeland. The dessert came from Italy, and found its way to France with the union of Italian and French nobility. It wasn't until the 20th century that a pastry chef by the name of Pierre Desfontaines gave them the iconic shape and texture that they're known for today. Tart lemon merengue, which gives this treat its zing, started with lemon curd, originally a byproduct of certain cheesemaking techniques. A pastry chef in Philadelphia, back in the 19th century, was credited with creating the first lemon merengue pie. From there, the taste sensation took off, and found itself morphed into various forms and shoehorned into unexpected places. Thus, the lemon merengue macaron has a heritage as blended as its delicate flavors and textures. 

Macarons are usually fairly small, but this one comes in at 14.6 inches in diameter. It's made of soft plush polyester, with an inner stuffing made of polypropylene cotton down for an extra silky squish. If your little lemon gets dirty, wash it by hand with warm water and mild soap; doing otherwise can cause fading and shrinkage.
