Bruno sighed. He hadn’t caught a single fish, and no fish meant nothing to sell at the market. And no market money meant no way to buy a fresh-baked huckleberry pie. Bruno’s belly grumbled. It had been a long day’s work with very little to show for it. There was one more fishing spot he could try his luck at, but it was a long hike. Bruno scratched his furry brown chin and considered both options. Hiking up to the waterfall would be tiring, but maybe he’d catch some fish. But perhaps he should cut his losses now and get to bed early for a good night’s sleep. Bruno decided to begin the long, hard hike up to the waterfall. It wasn’t easy- he had to take several long breaks to catch his breath. Finally, he could feel the cool mist of the churning water. He couldn’t believe his eyes- fish were leaping from the water by the dozens!. Bruno was enjoying himself so much catching fish after fish that he hadn’t noticed the sun go down. That meant the market was closed. Bruno looked into his fish basket. There would be no pie tonight, but at least he had some fresh fish. He should be thankful! He smiled all the way back down the trail, thinking about how proud he was of not giving up. Something caught his eye. His smile widened. A huckleberry bush.
Grizzlies are known to be extremely resourceful and adaptable animals, often adjusting their wide parameters of acceptable foods based on their environment. Major parts of their diet include berries, nuts, fish, birds and mammals of all sizes. These improvisational omnivores are attuned to nature’s rotating menu. During the springtime, a grizzly may forage for roots, shoots, and bulbs. Summertime means berry hunting. During the salmon run, they are talented anglers. The same claws that scoop roots from the earth, berries from the bush, and fish from the water also claw at an occasional big game kill.
Real grizzly bears can stand up to be 8 feet tall- or taller! However, our friend Bruno stands at about 10 inches. He’s got a snuggly-soft plush exterior and polyester shell with high quality polypropylene stuffing inside.
