Gerald the giraffe loved life on the savannah. Each day, he stretched his long neck higher and higher into the acacia trees to snag the tastiest leaves. After eating his fill, he usually lumbered over to the watering hole to greet the other giraffes stopping in for a drink. He was just about to take his first sip when it happened: a particularly itchy itch struck right in the center of his back. Unfortunately for Gerald, giraffes can’t easily scratch an itch. “Do what the rest of us do, Gerald!” his sister said. “Go roll around in some dust. You’ll feel much better.” Gerald found a nice, secluded patch of dirt and got to rolling. He rolled this way and that way, kicking up so much dust that the other animals thought they were caught in a dust storm. Thankfully, all that rolling scratched Gerald’s itch and he felt much better.

Giraffes keep clean in clever ways suited to the dry savannah. They often dust bathe, coating their skin with fine soil that helps smother parasites and absorb excess oils. Their long, flexible tongues can reach awkward spots to lick away dirt and insects. Family members sometimes groom one another. Sunlight and dry air also help keep their coats healthy by discouraging bacteria. Although they drink regularly, giraffes do not rely on water for bathing like some other animals. These simple habits work together to keep giraffes comfortable, clean, and ready for another day of foraging for acacia leaves.
