Eleanor the elephant loved life on the savannah. She loved exploring with her herd, playing hide and seek in the tall grass, and foraging for yummy food. Today was different, though. Today was the hottest day of the year and Eleanor didn’t feel like doing anything. When the herd decided to go down to the watering hole to cool off, Eleanor was not feeling excited. Unlike the older elephants, she couldn’t swim. So that meant everyone else would get to cool off and she’d be stuck in the mud puddles. Finally, they arrived and Eleanor felt grumpy as she approached the shallow water. That is, until she dipped her foot in. That felt nice! Seconds later, Eleanor was covered head to toe in mud and having the time of her life rolling around in the mud. 

Elephants often bathe by covering their bodies with dust and mud to protect their skin. They use their trunks to scoop up dirt or wet mud and toss it onto their backs and sides. This behavior helps shield their skin from the sun’s harsh rays and prevents sunburn. Dust and mud also act as a natural insect repellent, keeping biting flies and parasites away. When the mud dries, it can trap bacteria and dead skin, which then flakes off and keeps the elephant clean. Bathing this way also helps elephants stay cool in hot climates. Overall, dust and mud bathing is an important part of an elephant’s daily care and survival.
