What is the holiday season without the cheerful jingle of bells? That’s where our friend Peep comes in. Peep the chick’s holiday job is to make sure every bell is in perfect working order. After a careful polish and shine, each bell is tested to ensure it’s ready to spread holiday cheer. When her work is done, Peep loves nothing more than spending the evening caroling with her neighbors. She makes sure everyone has a jingle bell to shake and delights in the joy they create together. Have you ever wondered why adorable baby chicks are yellow, while mature chickens are not? As cute as a fluffy yellow chicken would be, most adult chickens are white, red, or black. Those iconic, downy yellow feathers come from pigments in the chick’s egg yolk. As the chick grows inside the egg, its body absorbs more of the yolk for nourishment. Eventually, the yolk sac is absorbed into the chick’s abdomen, providing food for the first few days after hatching. This allows the chick to survive without immediately needing to find food. As the chick grows and begins to molt, the new feathers that emerge give a better indication of its future coloring.
