This isn't too far off from its more modern fictional associations, where a bat astride the full moon is likely a vampire in disguise. Gothic art and literature often featured a motif not too far off from the one on this slipper, a bat against the full moon. This is commonly associated with the role of the bat in legend as a witch's familiar.
