Barney is a bashful bloke who believes the best books 📖 are the ones that bring you both knowledge and adventure. Books have brought Barney to the Byzantine Empire, where he learned about buildings made of marble. He embarked on a ramble beyond the Butterfly Nebula and observed a binary star and the bubbles 🫧 on either side. Books beguile the senses and may bring about a bohemian behavior. Barney also plays the bassoon, and you can hear it bellow boorishly every Tuesday before bed.

The earliest books were written on clay tablets, over 5,000 years ago, in Mesopotamia. Stone slabs were also used to record religious or philosophical reflections, usually also illustrated. Ancient Egyptians used papyrus as a medium for writing as early 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Greeks later invented parchment, made of animal skin, which proved more solid and easier to conserve over time. We then turn to China for the invention of paper, in about 105 CE, but wait another 200 years for paper to become a widespread writing medium. The word codex refers to the format where sheets are fastened together into a pamphlet 📕 rather than one single page rolled into a scroll 📜.
