The big orange pumpkins that we know belong to the species Cucurbita pepo, which appears to have been cultivated since about 7000 BCE according to pumpkin fragments discovered in Mexico. Wild pumpkin species are native to North America, but many cultivars are now grown around the world. The ancient Three Sisters method of companion planting developed by several indigenous societies of North America revolved around different squash species (along with maize 🌽and beans 🫘). There are two possible origins of the word “pumpkin”. In the first, the word derives from Ancient Greek through Latin and Middle French to Early Modern English and gives us pompion, later changed to pumpkin. The second proposes an origin in the Massachusett language, pôhpukun, meaning grows forth round.
