People have kept axolotls as both pets and research subjects since the 19th century. Around that time, scientists from around Europe brought the curious animal home, and began examining and breeding it. The axolotl's only native habitat is a single lake in Mexico City, which is estimated to host under 1,000 specimen at this point, but there are millions of them kept and bred in captivity around the world. 

The Weighted Axolotl comes in a pleasant pink color, with gray gills that light up green in darkness, after being charged in sunlight. Select areas of the toy are filled with weighted beads, bringing the total weight of the plushie to about 4 pounds. The rest of its 31.5 inch length is stuffed with a special polypropylene cotton down that's silky to the touch, and the outside is plush polyester. If the toy gets dirty, it's best to wash it inside a pillowcase, and to use warm water. Washing in water that's too hot or too cold could cause fading, shrinkage, issues with the weighted beads, and other trouble.
