Before a little baby bear begins to develop in its mother’s belly, they undergo a process known as delayed implantation. The fertilized embryo will effectively float around in the uterus for about five months. When bear cubs are born, they are quite small and weigh less than a pound (for black bears). As the winter months pass ☃️, the mother nurses her cubs and loses over one third of her body weight. The young bears will remain with their mothers until they are 17 months old, after which she is ready to mate again and chases them away.
