Gardening requires patience, and Tagalong Sloth Squishy has that in spades! But what a joy it is to sow seeds 🌱 and watch them grow into beautiful mature plants🌻! She has planted perennial plants in one section of her garden, including her favorite – peonies and lilac 🪻 – and some flowers that attract butterflies, like coneflowers, milkweed and goldenrods. In her vegetable patch, Tagalong Sloth uses companion planting to repel pests, such as planting tomatoes and basil side by side. She also likes to include edible flowers, particularly nasturtiums and begonias. What will you plant in your garden this spring?
The word “sloth” means “laziness” and was chosen to name these animals because of their very low metabolism and slow movements. Being so slow does have benefits, like avoiding predation by hawks and cats, who hunt by sight. Their shaggy coat has a unique feature: the hairs are grooved which allows green algae to grow in them. The algae makes sloths appear to have a slight green color and helps them camouflage in trees. Sloths can actually feed off the algae and some unique species of moths have evolved to live uniquely on sloths, feeding off the algae.
