Sourdough is one of the oldest types of leavened bread, and is known to have been enjoyed as far back as 4,000 BC in ancient Egypt. As it spread around the globe, each region and culture adopted their own methods of making this distinctive baked good. The most essential part of sourdough is a living ingredient called the starter, which is a clump of flour and water that's fermented using wild yeast and lactic acid. A small portion of the starter goes into each batch of sourdough, and the starter must be fed with more flour and water to stay active. A healthy starter will bubble, and can even let you know it's hungry - liquid, known as hooch, will form on the top of the starter, and is your sign that it's time for a feeding. 

This not-so-sour stuffy comes to you in two forms. The round roll measures up at 17.7 inches in diameter, while the long bread is 19.6 inches in length, and fairly girthy. The exterior of both is made from a soft plush polyester, while the interior is made of polypropylene cotton down that's extra silky to the touch. Should your soft starter pick up some unintentional bacteria or other nastiness, simply wash it by hand with warm water and mild soap to make it good as new. Avoid machine washing, as this can cause fading, shrinkage, and other problems.
