The first rocket launched with enough force and speed to break through Earth's atmosphere and make it into space was sent out from Germany in 1942. In order to break through, it had to reach speeds of at least 7 miles per second. Modern rockets are far more powerful and feature-packed, putting out around a million pounds of force when they take off. One of the latest rockets, the Falcon Heavy built by SpaceX, was created with the aim of getting mankind one step closer to being able to explore Mars. 

This little flyer is 15.75 inches from the top of its cone to the bottom of its tail flame. Its shape isn't completely round or cylindrical like a real rocket; instead, it's shaped more like a space cheeseburger. The outside is made from a soft polyester that's silky smooth to the touch, and the stuffing is made from a downy polypropylene cotton blend. This rocket may need a bath after each flight, but be sure to use warm water and a mild soap; water that's too cold could shrink it, and water that's too hot can make its colors fade.
