Today was a big day for Bao the Panda: it was the annual Bamboo Forest Gymnastics Competition. This year, the panda team was determined to finally beat their arch rivals- the rabbit team. Bao’s coach pulled the team aside after the scores were all tied up. “Is anyone willing to try the triple bamboo crunch twist?” The pandas, including Bao, gasped. No one had mastered that move yet. Bao looked at his teammates’ forlorn expressions and raised a paw. “I’ll try it!” Bao’s teammates clapped him on the back and wished him luck. When it was his turn, Bao approached the balance beam and took a deep breath. He ran, gathered speed, leapt, and flopped. Bao’s cheeks turned pink as he slowly stood up from his big tumble. His team rushed over to see if he was ok. Bao felt embarrassed and knew he had let his team down. He patiently watched the lizards, herons, and foxes compete. His heart sank knowing that not only would the rabbits beat them, but so would all of the other teams. When it was time for the judge’s deliberation, he didn’t want to look. The judges cast glances between the rabbits and pandas and whispered in hushed tones. “We have a special prize to award this year. We present the bravery award to Bao for having the guts to push beyond his comfort zone.” Bao’s teammates cheered, and Bao smiled as he accepted his award.

Pandas have also come to showcase the unity of gentleness and strength. Despite being a large animal, pandas are not known for aggression. Because they have long been an endangered species, they embody rarity and preciousness.
