Also known as 'Quick Silver' by its cosmic companions, Mercury works hard to maintain its reputation each year during the annual Milky Way Races. This little underdog of a planet surprised its fellow racers by winning the race to the Sun on its very first try. Mercury has shown no signs of slowing down either, as each year the smallest Milky Way racer takes home the gold. The other racers are good sports, and never get jealous when they lose... except perhaps Venus, who's sometimes a bit of a hothead. But Mercury's a good sport too, and plans to take Venus out to see the meteor ☄️ showers after the race to cheer it up.

Mercury is the fastest planet in our solar system, orbiting the sun in about 88 days. It travels at an average speed of 107,000 miles per hour, with significant variations depending on where it is in orbit, which is an extreme elliptical. When Mercury is closest to the Sun, which is called the perihelion of its orbit, it moves at about 130,000 mph, and slows down to about 87,000 mph when it's furthest from the Sun, also called the aphelion part of the orbit. What makes this speed especially impressive is Mercury's size, as it is the smallest planet in our solar system.
