Although Earth is known for its lush blue oceans, they were once a completely different color. It is generally believed that between 1.8 and 3.8 billion years ago, our big blue marble was once green. This would have been caused by huge amounts of dissolved ferrous iron and iron hydroxide particles in the ocean. These materials would have absorbed blue light rays, leaving the water a rich green color. Over time, the evolution of cyanobacteria, which absorbed the green light through photosynthesis, produced oxygen that reacted with the iron to form rust particles which settled out of the water. This gradual process, known as The Great Oxidation Event, took place about 600 million years ago, and as the iron was removed from our oceans, they took on the gorgeous blue appearance we know today.

We also swapped out the molten core with a lightweight, polypropylene cotton blend, making it much more fun to carry. This little planet may be cleaned with lint rolling or gentle vacuuming.
