Real axolotls may not sport the massive gills seen on this toy, but they do have feathery gills that come out of their heads. Those gills are well-adapted to sucking oxygen out of water all around the axolotl, and work just as well when stationary as when moving. These large gills are the only way an axolotl is able to breathe, which means that they can't be out of water for very long. There are many species of salamander that can survive both on land and in water, and some of these are quite closely related to the axolotl. 

This small toy is actually fairly close to the size of a real axolotl, albeit a good bit fluffier. When you order, you'll receive one of the six variants shown below; why not collect them all? No matter which one you get, it will stand 10.6 inches tall, with an exterior made of soft polyester, and stuffing made from a special polypropylene cotton down. Be sure to wash your new friend only in lukewarm water, with a mild soap; using water that's too hot or too cold, or soap that's too harsh, can cause fading or shrinkage.
