The Japanese maple, Acer palmatum, is recognized by its strongly lobed leaves and brilliant red coloration in the fall. The leaves have five, seven or nine acutely pointed lobes, which depends on both the subspecies and the cultivar. The tree itself is surprisingly small for a maple, reaching 20 to 33 feet (6 to 10 meters) in most cases. It exhibits a beautiful dome shape at maturity, making it a particularly aesthetically pleasing tree. For centuries, the Japanese maple has been a subject in art🎋, inspiring writers, poets and other artists to this day. There are three subspecies of Japanese maple, with leaf size ranging from 1.5 to 2.75 inches (4-7 cm) in the smallest subspecies to 2.25 to 4.75 inches (6-12 cm) in the two larger ones.
