Although they appear similar, the AKM is the lightweight, modern interpretation of the well known AK-47. Designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, this leaner version of the Soviet original was less expensive, and lended itself to mass production. This allowed the AKM to secure its place as the standard for the Soviet Army, cementing itself as an icon in Russian 🇷🇺 military history. 

The new AKM sported several improvements over the previous AK-47, which helped to make it a cost-effective alternative. The receiver was stamped from a sheet of steel, rather than a block, and the receiver housing contained a rigid tubular cross section which added structural support. These new features, which were built using spot welding, not only helped lower costs, but also improved accuracy and reliability, propelling the AKM's relevance into the twenty-first century.
