Interestingly, the birth of the Christmas tree is a complicated story with multiple branches. What is probably the most well known early Christmas tree was decorated by Martin Luther, a Protestant Christian leader in sixteenth century Germany. It is said that he brought an evergreen tree indoors as a way to comfort his family through an especially harsh winter. He adorned it with candles as bright as stars in the night sky, encouraging and inspiring them through a difficult season.
