Pumpkins come in a great variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Most cultivars come from one of the following five species: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata, and C. argyrosperma. One of the eldest varieties, the sugar pumpkin or Connecticut field pumpkin (C. pepo), is also one of the most popular Halloween pumpkins because of its smooth round shape and bright orange color. It is also particularly suited for canning. Giant pumpkins have been grown since the 1800s. The first competition giant pumpkins were grown by William Warnock of Ontario. His first record was a pumpkin weighing 365 pounds (166kg) in 1893, and pumpkins have been getting bigger ever since. The 2023 record holder weighed a whopping 2,749 pounds (1,247kg). From these incredibly large vegetables we get giant pumpkin boat races and pumpkin chucking.
