In the fairy tale Cinderella, a pumpkin is turned into a carriage by the fairy godmother so Cinderella can get to the ball, but at midnight, the carriage reverts back to a pumpkin. In the ghost story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a headless horseman uses a pumpkin instead of a head.
