Axolotls are part of an evolutionary chain that traces back millions of years, earning them the nickname "living fossil" in the scientific community. Axolotls are part of the salamander family, and are closely related to the tiger salamander, another popular pet. Both species, among other salamanders, may also be part of the story of how life evolved in water and moved onto land; a large-headed salamander of some sort was recently found fossilized in Namibia.
