Bianca was finally ready to go to bunny school. She was so eager to meet new friends, try new things, and most importantly to all bunnies: master the bunny hop. Bunnies everywhere use the hop to escape enemies and to quickly and effectively forage for food. When it was Bianca’s turn to demonstrate the hop, she…flopped. And rolled. The other bunnies laughed. Just as Bianca began to feel embarrassed, someone shouted “hawk!” Everyone panicked as the large bird began descending toward the bunnies. Bianca eyed two particularly small bunnies frozen in fear. She tumbled towards them, rolling in a perfect collision course and BAM! She knocked both bunnies and herself into the rabbit hole and safe from the hawk. The bunnies swarmed Bianca. “You’re a  hero! Can you teach me how to roll, too?” Bianca smiled and promised to teach them. Soon, all the bunnies everywhere were laughing and rolling around. 

Bunnies hop because of their strong, muscular back legs. These muscles allow them to push off the ground with great force. Their long hind legs act like a spring board, and stores energy and then releases it to create a powerful jump. Hopping helps bunnies move quickly and efficiently across their environment and to escape from predators. Hopping allows them to cover large distances in their territory as they search for food. Bunnies also have lightweight bodies and flexible spines, allowing them to change direction mid-hop. Young bunnies start hopping very soon after birth and their hopping improves as they grow stronger.
