As winter approached, Bailey the bear went on an eating rampage. He ate so much, his friends had to roll his chubby body into his cave for hibernation. Berries, salmon, elk, even some leftovers from the local campsite were more than enough to get him through the winter. Next year, Bailey will know not to overdo it. His eyes grew heavy. His belly was full. Satisfied knowing his full stomach will get him through hibernation was comforting and he drifted off to sleep. With a smile, Bailey wonders if his friends will have to roll him out of his cave come Spring. 

Bears hibernate as a survival strategy during the cold winter months when food is scarce. Before hibernation, they spend the fall eating large amounts of food to build up fat reserves. This fat provides energy for their bodies while they sleep for extended periods. During hibernation, a bear’s heart rate and metabolism slow down significantly to conserve energy. They do not eat or drink while hibernating. Instead, they rely entirely on their stored fat. Bears usually find or create dens, such as caves or hollowed-out trees, to stay safe and warm during this time. Hibernation allows bears to survive harsh conditions and emerge in spring ready to find food and continue their normal activities.
